Call me peace, call me Palestinian.
At the March 15th protest, a young woman came up to me and actually told me, that as long as I’m living in Palestine, and want to call myself Palestinian I should speak Arabic. My Arabic isn’t great, which is why I tend to speak English most of the time, to that woman I dedicate this.
Language, is only a bunch of sounds fit to have a meaning
Salam
Shalom
Peace
Hello
Bonjour
Or if I were a mute I would simply wave.
If I were a mute would I not be considered Palestinian because I didn’t speak Arabic?
Will you sit here and judge me based on the language I speak, and then have the audacity to ask not to be looked at as a terrorist because you’re Arab? While you’re judging me just as harshly.
Will you look me in the eye and say that you are more Palestinian than I, because your Arabic is better than mine? Well, if that’s what it means to be Palestinian then you’re right, I’m not even close to being a Palestinian. To me however, being Palestinian, is longing for peace, working for peace, being peace. To me being Palestinian is respecting others no matter whom or what they are, because as Palestinians we have suffered, and we wouldn’t want anyone else to suffer. In my dictionary, YOU aren’t Palestinian enough, not because of the language you speak, but because of the lack of humanity you have.
Dear random woman that told me I’m not Palestinian enough with a superior tone, we’re all Palestine, regardless of the language we speak. Palestine is us and we are Palestine. Together.
